I have been a support worker for the best part of 25 years, caring for the elderly, people with mental-health issues and homeless people. I have a Diploma and NVQ3 in Professional Counselling and have done various In-House training over the years, with MIND and with Stonham, Homegroup. I looked after my mother during her last 4-5 years when she suffered with dementia, in her own home, and up until early last year, looked after an elderly gentleman at his flat within a supported housing complex. I was with this man for 7 years. I am also a trained pianist having reached grade 7 on the piano. I am a keen swimmer and walker and enjoy visiting cultural events. I am not religious though I hold a deep sense of spiritual principles and respect others feel for this. ...

I have over 12 years experience. I began with no experience working under supervision in nursing and residential homes. I’m now experienced and qualified with NVQ 2 in Health and Social Care for Adults. I’m a lone worker working with little or no supervision. Care work is not clear cut. It is person centred. One size does not fit all and have learnt to adapt to individual presentations. The needs can be medical, cultural, psychological, spiritual, emotional or social. The care plan states how each individual’s care and support needs are going to be met in their best interest. These are subject to change. Risk assessments determine the needs. I have supported independence, exploring boundaries of capability to meet individual needs. Mutual respect of values and beliefs of the individual, family, company is important.
